Low Fat Diet 

How this diet works:  

All types of added fats, such as butter, margarine, mayonnaise, sour cream and salad dressings, are reduced or eliminated. Foods high in fat, such as fried foods, snack foods, cheeses and meats, should be replaced with lower-fat versions or eaten in smaller portions. 

Good points:

A high-fat diet is supposedly associated not only with obesity but also with heart disease and some types of cancer. The plan encourages the use of foods naturally low in fat, such as fruits and vegetables, which also contain healthy amounts of essential nutrients. 

Bad points:

There has been an explosion of foods that are reduced in fat yet contain lots of sugar: snack bars, cookies, cakes, candies, ice cream and so on. Those foods do not promote a healthy diet, even if they are low in fat.   It also does not take into account that fat is needed in the diet and that you must have a balance of fats.  See article Essential Fatty Acids.

You can eat at restaurants.  You need to buy foods that are fat-free or reduced in fat.   For more info on the fats that you do need, read our article Essential Fatty Acids.

This diet is okay for vegetarians. It's also important to remember that fat-free foods still contain calories and can cause weight gain if over consumed. Also, check the packaging, low fat usually means high-sugar (to give it some flavor).
