“Real Energy” Drink Ingredients – How they Work

Caffeine vs. Guarana
Burning Stored Energy

Caffeine: stimulates the cortex of your brain heightening the intensity of mental activity. This can result in a temporary feeling of alertness and, in the short term, banishes drowsiness and feelings of fatigue.

Caffeine is a stimulant, meaning it accelerates physiological activity. Specifically, it speeds up the action of your brain and makes you more alert. It does this by binding to adenosine receptors in the brain.

Normally, the chemical adenosine binds to these, causing drowsiness by slowing down nerve cell activity. The caffeine doesn’t have this effect, but it does get in the way of the adenosine binding to these adenosine receptors.

Because the caffeine is blocking the adenosine receptors, our neurons become more active than they otherwise would be. That is why it seems to be good for the brain. Then, the other body systems responds to all the activity as though it was an emergency, by releasing hormones that tell the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline. This is what is sometimes known as the “fight or flight” hormone (and is also called epinephrine). The release of adrenaline causes:

  • A faster heart rate
  • An opening up of breathing tubes
  • A release of sugar into the bloodstream from the liver.
  • A readying (tightening) of muscles for action.
  • An increase in blood flow to muscles.

Essentially all that adrenaline makes you tensed and ready for action, but not necessarily intellectual action. Yu do become more alert initially, and your brain may work better and faster.

Studies which demonstrate an improvement in mental function usually show this improvement only after one eight-ounce cup of coffee, not two or three.

Other effects of caffeine on the brain include and increase in dopamine levels, much like that caused by amphetamines or heroine (but without such a pronounced effect).

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which activates the pleasure centers of the brain. It is suspected that this is part of the reason caffeine can be so addicting. Alert and happy? Your body and brain likes this stuff.

The blocking of adenosine receptors will prevent deep sleep, which you need. As a result you are tired the next day and so you reach for more coffee.

Guarana is a herbal drink that contains a type alkaloid (active ingredient) similar to caffeine known as guaranine. This drink is made up of Guarana seed extract and it is nearly two or three times stronger than the caffeine used in coffee, tea and soft drinks.

Why is there so much difference between guaranine found in a Guarana dink and caffeine found in coffee, tea and soft drinks? It is because the Guarana seed extract is a fatty substance (even in powder form) and is not easily dissolved in water.

The human body can’t absorb Guarana seed extract drink quickly, and it sometimes may take many hours to absorb. The Guarana seed extract drink is absorbed gradually, therefore the energy enhancement effects of guarana that are experienced from Guarana drink are not like that of coffee or tea, with its rapid rise and quick drop off.

Over hours, Guarana keeps going and creating energy. One of the claimed effects of guaranine is a cooling action that rejuvenates and relaxes, whereas caffeine gives a short energy boost up that over-heats and excites the body.

The main reason behind this is that Guarana contains several other alkaloids (active ingredients) that modify the activity of the material. Memory is also supported by ingesting Guarana Seed Extract.

Guarana seed extract is generally used as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, to stop smoking, for pain relief, or as an additive to soft drinks. Guarana seed extract has also shown to increase alertness, fights weakness, and aids stamina and physical endurance.

Some people drink Guarana seed extract as a health tonic. Guarana seed extract might be useful to reduce obesity as it burns the fat from the body.

Guarana seed extract helps in release of stored fat from the body and allows the stored fats in the body to be turned into energy.

Ribose Excelerates Energy Recovery

D-Ribose is made in your body in a slow, laborious process and cannot be found in food. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) causes your body to dump key energy molecules like Acetyl-L Carnitine and D-Ribose, making it hard to get the body’s energy furnaces working again even after these problems were treated.

Not having D-Ribose would be like trying to build a fire without kindling – nothing would happen. Giving D-Ribose to people with CFS will jump-start their energy furnaces.

A recently published study showed an average 44.7% increase in energy after only 3 weeks (improvement began at 12 days) and an average overall improvement in quality of life of 30%. Two thirds of the CFS and FMS patients felt they had improved. Usually a 10% improvement for a single nutrient is considered excellent. A 44.7% improvement is incredible.

D-Ribose is a simple, five-carbon sugar (known as a pentose by biochemists) that is found naturally in our bodies. But Ribose is not like any other sugar. Sugars we are all familiar with, such as table sugar (sucrose), corn sugar (glucose), milk sugar (lactose), honey (predominately fructose), and others are used by the body as fuel.

Ribose, on the other hand, is special. When we consume Ribose, the body recognizes that it is different from other sugars and preserves it for the vital work of actually making the energy molecules that powers our hearts, muscles, brains, and every other tissue in the body.

A key molecule, called adenosine triphosphate (or ATP for short), is known as the energy creator of the cell because the amount of ATP we have in our tissues determines whether we will be fatigued, or will have the energy we need to live vital, active lives.

D-Ribose provides the key building block of ATP, and the presence of D-Ribose in the cell stimulates the metabolic pathway our bodies use to actually make this vital compound.

If the cell does not have enough Ribose, it cannot make ATP. So, when cells and tissues become energy starved, the availability of Ribose is critical to energy recovery.

Though it is a simple sugar, D-Ribose will not raise blood sugar levels, in fact, it will lower them slightly.

D-Ribose is an excellent supplement for individuals who are chronically tired, have muscle stiffness, soreness and pain.

Acetyl L-Carnitine Benefits

L-Carnitine is converted by the body from the proteins found primarily in meat. Probably the very best L-Carnitine benefit, and the one that most people are interested in, is the way the L-Carnitine helps the body metabolize fatty acids.

One a cellular level, each cell in the body burns and processes its own energy. The power plant of the cell is called the mitrochondria. Each cell has one, and they process energy on a cellular level.

But in order for energy to get to the mitrochondria, it must be transported there, just like oil needs to come through miles of piping to get to the oil refinery center.

The chemical that the cell needs in order to transport fat to the mitrochondria to be metabolized is L-Carnitine.

When you combine L-Carnitine with exercise, the fat burning is kicked off and the L-Carnitine does what it’s best at, providing the body with lots of energy from stored fats.

The body can convert L-Carnitine to acetyl-L-carnitine and back again when it requires either of these compounds.

Acetyl L-Carnitine is a modified form of L-Carnitine. This form of L-Carnitine is more easily accessed by the body, as it absorbs into the small intestine and passes through the blood-brain barrier more efficiently.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine does four really remarkable things for your brain and all of your nervous system, including:

  • Keep neurons healthy and energetic
  • Repairs and protects membrane signal receptors
  • Protects neurons form the damage of stress
  • Helps increase levels of the important brain messenger acetylcholine to promote memory function and learning ability.

Simply put, Acetyl-L-Carnitine does virtually everything a nutrient could do to keep your brain functioning optimally.

Of particular importance is the ability of Acetyl-L-Carnitine to protect the mitochondria – the intracellular powerhouses. Consequently, Acetyl-L-Carnitine not only protects the brain, but the entire body as well. You are as young as your brain, but you are also only as young as your mitochondria throughout your body as well. Acetyl-L-Carnatine protects all of the above.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine increases levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) – an important brain healing compound. Acetyl-L-Carnitine also increases the ability of the body to use NGF more effectively. NGF plays a key role in preserving neurons, especially those that make the valuable brain messenger chemical acetylcholine. Acetyl-L-Carnitine also helps neurons in the hippocampus respond better to NGF. As we age, we respond less effectively to NGF, and Acetyl-L-Carnitine reverses this decline.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine also helps maintain the myelin sheath around the nerves that is important for their health and function. This is important because without myelin, our nerves cannot transmit their messages at optimal speed. This suggests that Acetyl-L-Carnitine might be useful in the treatment and prevention of multiple sclerosis.
